This article summarizes what I was stumbling on about a while back. I can make it even more brief: We seek energy independence, as a country, by switching to renewable energy resources like wind and solar. Renewable energy requires materials that can not be adequately supplied in our own country. So, arguments that renewable energy will release us from reliance on other countries are false, the dependence is merely translated to other countries with different resources.
